Reframe Writer's Block as a Signal That Something in the Work Needs Resolving
The document is open and you have been looking at the same paragraph for twenty minutes. The standard advice is to write through it. This instead treats the block as a signal: what it is telling you about the structure, the logic, or the unresolved question somewhere earlier in the draft. Often the block is right and the piece needs surgery, not perseverance.
You are stuck on a piece of writing: you know what you want to write but the words are not coming, or you open the document and find reasons not to start. Reframe the block as diagnostic information about the work, not about your ability to write. Work through each of the following questions and give a one-sentence honest answer to each: 1. Where exactly are you stuck? Identify the specific sentence, scene, or section. 2. Is the block about what to say, or about how to say it? 3. Does the piece feel structurally wrong from the point you are stuck? If so, where did it go off course? 4. Is there something earlier in the draft that contradicts or undermines where you are trying to go? 5. Are you writing toward a point you have not clearly defined yet? Once you have answered the five questions, identify the single most likely cause of the block and what a writer would do to resolve it. The answer is probably not to keep writing forward.
