Expose the False Dichotomy
Someone has framed a choice as this or that, and you suspect the menu is rigged. This checks whether a false dichotomy is at work, states it plainly in either-or form, explains what the framing is hiding, and lists at least three real options sitting outside the two on offer. Handy against ultimatums and forced choices.
A false dichotomy (also called a false dilemma) presents only two options when more exist. The argument below may contain one. Investigate and respond.
Argument: "{ARGUMENT_TEXT}"
1. Identify whether a false dichotomy is present and state it clearly in 'either X or Y' form
2. Explain why this framing is artificially restrictive: what options are being hidden?
3. List at least three genuine alternatives that fall outside the false binary
4. Discuss why speakers use false dichotomies: rhetorical pressure, genuine oversight, or something else?
5. Suggest how the argument could be reframed honestly to acknowledge the full option space
If no false dichotomy exists, explain what kind of legitimate either/or reasoning is being used instead. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
