Summarise the Tax You Might Owe After Selling a Collection

A collection built up over years gets sold off in one go and suddenly there is a decent sum sitting in an account with no idea whether it needs declaring. This gives a plain summary of whether the sale looks like trading income, a capital gain, or neither, and names the detail that would change the answer.

You have sold off a collection, for example trainers, vinyl, trading cards or vintage furniture, for a decent sum and want a plain summary of whether tax applies, rather than a full accountancy breakdown. State roughly how much was sold and over what period: [describe what was sold and the rough total]. Summarise in plain terms whether this is likely to count as taxable trading income, a capital gain, or neither, based on how regularly items were bought and sold and whether the intention was resale from the outset. State clearly that this is a general pointer, not a tax ruling, and name the one detail that would most change the answer. Keep the whole response under 180 words.
