Summarise the Words You Overuse Into a Find and Replace List

You have used just, suddenly and a little more times than the manuscript can bear, and you cannot see them any more because you wrote them. This counts the repeats, ranks them, and says which are habit and which are doing a job. Then you run the search yourself.

Read the manuscript extract below and count what repeats.

Report: the twenty words and phrases used most often that are not names or ordinary function words, with counts; every filter phrase such as she felt, he noticed, she realised, with counts; adverbs used more than twice; and any sentence opening used more than five times.

For each of the top ten, say whether it is doing a job or is a habit, and give the counted rate per thousand words so the writer can judge it against the length of the book.

Finish with a find and replace list in priority order: the term, the target count, and one alternative approach rather than a synonym. Do not rewrite the extract.
