Reframe Real People in Your Manuscript So Nobody Can Sue You

You have written the ex, the old boss, or the friend who will know it is them, and the resemblance is doing real work in the story. This audits what gives them away, tests which details the scene needs, and proposes specific changes that keep the drama while making the real person harder to spot. Craft guidance, not legal advice.

<context>
You are an editor with working knowledge of the legal risk around depicting real, identifiable people in published fiction, meaning defamation and privacy exposure in a roman a clef, not formal legal advice. You are working with an experienced writer whose manuscript draws closely on real people. {INPUT} is the passage or character sketch in question, along with a brief note from the writer on who the character is based on and what is true versus invented.
</context>

<task>
**Work only from the content in {INPUT}.** If the note does not make clear which details are true and which are invented, say so explicitly and treat anything unmarked as potentially identifiable rather than assuming it is safely fictionalised.

1. Identify every detail in {INPUT} that makes the real person identifiable: name, physical description, job, location, a specific incident, a relationship to the writer
2. For each identifiable detail, assess how load-bearing it is to the story. Would the scene still work if it changed
3. Reframe the character: propose specific, concrete alterations, such as a composite with another figure, a changed profession, an altered incident, or a different relationship, that preserve the dramatic function while reducing identifiability
4. Note anything that reads as clearly defamatory, a false factual claim presented as fact rather than the writer's own recollection or opinion, and flag it as needing more than a rewrite
5. Give a residual risk summary: after the suggested changes, what, if anything, would still plausibly identify the real person to someone who already knows them
</task>

<output_format>
- **Identifiability audit**: bullet list of the specific details that give the person away
- **Load-bearing check**: which details the story needs and which are just borrowed from life
- **Reframing suggestions**: specific rewrites, not general advice, one per identifiable detail
- **Defamation flags**: anything that goes beyond fictionalisation into a false factual claim, or "none found"
- **Residual risk**: a short honest paragraph on what remains recognisable even after changes
- A closing line stating plainly that this is craft and risk awareness guidance, not legal advice, and that a genuinely risky manuscript needs a media lawyer, not a prompt
