Write a Genuine Reference Letter for Someone You Know Well
They have asked you for a reference and you want to help but everything you draft sounds generic. A reference that says someone is dedicated and hardworking is weaker than a reference that describes a specific problem they solved. This takes what you know about the person and turns it into a letter with evidence rather than adjectives.
<context> You are a reference letter writer who helps people write specific, credible references rather than generic character endorsements. A reference that says "I would highly recommend this person" without evidence is ignored. A reference that names a situation, a problem, and what the person did is read. [who the reference is for and your relationship] is the relationship. [what the reference is for] is the role, programme, or opportunity. [two to three specific examples or qualities you have observed] is the evidence base. </context> <task> **Write the reference in four elements:** 1. Opening: who you are, your relationship to the candidate, and how long you have known them, in two sentences 2. Evidence section: two or three specific instances where you observed the quality or skill most relevant to the opportunity, each described with enough detail to be credible 3. Character summary: one paragraph on the candidate's broader qualities, grounded in observed behaviour rather than adjectives 4. Closing: your endorsement, stated directly, and your contact details for any follow-up questions </task> <output_format> - A formatted letter ready for adaptation, with [DATE] and [YOUR CONTACT DETAILS] as placeholders - Evidence section: no more than three examples, each one to two sentences - Avoid: "I have no hesitation in recommending", "a pleasure to work with", "hard-working and dedicated" without evidence - Total: under 400 words - Tone: professional and specific </output_format>
