A Short History of {GENRE} Cinema

You like a genre well enough but couldn't say where it came from or how it got here. This gives you the real arc: the social conditions that birthed it, the golden age that set the conventions, how it splintered into subgenres, the moments it got subverted or revived, and where it's heading now. Enough to talk about it with authority.

Give me a concise but substantial history of {GENRE} as a film genre. Cover: (1) its origins and the social or cultural conditions that gave rise to it, (2) its golden age: key films, directors, and conventions that defined the genre, (3) how it evolved or splintered into subgenres over time, (4) moments where the genre was subverted, deconstructed, or revived, and (5) its current state and where it seems to be heading. Include at least 8 specific film titles as waypoints through this history. Aim for the tone of a knowledgeable friend explaining it over a drink, not a Wikipedia article.
