False Friends Danger List: Words That Will Embarrass You
Some foreign words look exactly like a word you know and mean something completely different, which is how people accidentally say something mortifying at dinner. This builds a false-friends reference for your language pair: each lookalike, what it actually means, the wrong usage learners typically blurt out, and the right one. Read it before you embarrass yourself.
I am a native {NATIVE_LANGUAGE} speaker learning {TARGET_LANGUAGE}. Generate a comprehensive false-friends reference covering the most dangerous vocabulary traps between these two languages.
For each false friend pair:
- Show the {NATIVE_LANGUAGE} word and its true meaning
- Show the {TARGET_LANGUAGE} lookalike and its true meaning
- Provide one sentence showing the WRONG usage a learner typically makes
- Provide one sentence showing the CORRECT usage in {TARGET_LANGUAGE}
- Add a memory tip to keep them separate
Prioritise pairs that cause the most embarrassing or professionally damaging misunderstandings. Group them into three risk tiers: mildly confusing, seriously misleading, and potentially offensive. End with a 5-question self-test. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
