Sharpen Your Research Question with the PICO/SPIDER Frame
A research question that's too broad makes the whole project flounder. Give your draft and field, and this picks whether PICO or SPIDER fits and explains why, then breaks your question into the chosen framework's components so it becomes specific, answerable and worth the months you're about to spend on it.
I have a draft research question that feels too broad or unclear. My draft question is: {DRAFT_RESEARCH_QUESTION}. My field of study is: {FIELD_OF_STUDY}.
First, identify whether a PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) or SPIDER (Sample, Phenomenon of Interest, Design, Evaluation, Research type) framework better fits this question and explain why.
Then, deconstruct my draft question into the chosen framework's components. Point out any components that are missing, vague, or overloaded.
Finally, offer three progressively refined versions of the question: one narrower, one broader, and one that is optimally scoped for a 10,000-word dissertation. For each version, note the trade-offs in terms of feasibility and depth. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
