Pilot Structure Audit: Does Your Episode One Work?
A pilot has to juggle more than any other episode and most drop a ball. This audits your synopsis against five demands at once: introduce the world, set up the protagonist's flaw and want, fix the tonal contract, deliver a standalone story, and promise what the series will become. Each gets scored. For TV writers who need to know if episode one actually carries the weight.
Audit the structure of my TV pilot script against the proven requirements of a strong pilot episode. A pilot must simultaneously: introduce the world, establish the protagonist's flaw and want, set the series' tonal contract, deliver a standalone story, and end with a promise of what the series will be.
Here is my pilot outline or synopsis:
{PILOT_SYNOPSIS}
Evaluate it against these five requirements, scoring each 1 to 5 with specific evidence from the synopsis. Then identify:
- The single biggest structural weakness and how to fix it
- Whether the ending functions as a series engine (does it open up story, or close it down?)
- One scene that is doing too much work and should be split
- One scene that could be cut entirely without losing anything essential
