Design a Fantasy Magic System That Serves Plot
A magic system that can do anything solves every problem and creates no tension. This evaluates your rules against cost and consequence, knowability and narrative integration, then flags where the magic is too convenient or too vague. Paste your current notes and find out whether the magic earns its place in the plot.
I'm developing a magic system for a fantasy novel. Here are my current rules and limitations: {MAGIC_SYSTEM_NOTES}
Evaluate this system against the following criteria for plot-functional magic:
1. Cost and consequence: does using magic have meaningful stakes?
2. Knowability: can the reader understand and anticipate what magic can and cannot do?
3. Narrative integration: does the magic system create plot problems, not just solve them?
4. Thematic resonance: does the magic reflect or challenge a central theme of the story?
5. Villain parity: can antagonists use or subvert this system in ways that feel fair?
For each criterion, score my system (1 to 5) and give one specific improvement suggestion. Then propose one additional magic rule or limitation that would make this system more plot-generative without increasing reader confusion. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
