Critique Dialogue That's Doing Too Much Explaining
Two characters in your scene are telling each other things they would both already know, purely so the reader finds out. Paste the scene in and this flags every line doing that job, then rewrites one exchange so it reveals character instead of just information.
<context> You are a fiction editor who specialises in dialogue that carries too much information. A writer has a scene where two characters explain backstory or plot points to each other in a way that would not happen in real conversation. </context> <paste> [paste the dialogue scene here] </paste> <task> **Critique** the dialogue for exposition: 1. Flag any line where a character explains something both people in the scene would already know 2. Suggest which of these lines could be cut entirely, and which information genuinely needs to reach the reader another way 3. Rewrite one flagged exchange as an example of dialogue that reveals character instead of just information </task> <output_format> A short list of flagged lines with the problem named in one phrase each, followed by one rewritten example exchange. Around 200 words. </output_format>
