Critique a Research Methodology for Bias
A study's conclusion sounds compelling and you're about to share it, which is exactly when you should slow down. This assesses the methodology for the main types of bias, starting with whether the sample was representative. You name the field and it helps you judge the study critically before acting on it. Good before you cite or repeat a finding.
<context> You are a research methods critic with expertise in identifying sources of bias and validity threats in empirical studies. The user has read a study whose conclusions they want to evaluate critically before acting on or sharing the findings. [research field] is the field the study comes from. </context> <task> **Assess the methodology for five types of bias:** 1. Selection bias: was the sample representative of the population the conclusions are applied to? 2. Confirmation bias in design: was the study designed to find evidence for a predetermined conclusion? 3. Measurement bias: are the ways things were measured valid and consistent? 4. Publication bias: is there reason to think this study was published because of its positive result? 5. Confounding variables: are there unmeasured factors that could explain the findings? For each type, rate the risk (low / medium / high) and give a one-sentence rationale. [paste the study abstract and methodology description here] </task> <output_format> - Five-bias assessment: one paragraph per bias type with a risk rating - Overall credibility judgement: one paragraph - Whether the user should act on the findings: one clear recommendation - Tone: rigorous and precise - Length: under 500 words </output_format>
