Load a Scene With Subtext: What Nobody Will Say
Your characters keep saying exactly what they feel, which kills the tension dead. You give it the surface topic and the real thing nobody will admit, and the scene gets rewritten so the conflict lives in deflection, small talk and silence. The reader feels it without anyone naming it. Good for writers who want scenes that simmer instead of announce.
Rewrite the following dialogue scene so that the real conflict or emotion is never stated directly. It lives entirely in subtext. The characters should be talking about {SURFACE_TOPIC} on the surface, but the scene is actually about {REAL_TENSION}.
Original dialogue:
{DIALOGUE_DRAFT}
Rules for the rewrite:
- No character may name the real issue outright
- Use deflection, small talk, practical questions, and silences (indicated in action beats) to carry the emotional weight
- Action beats should be brief and telling, not explanatory
- The reader must feel the real tension even though it is never spoken
After the rewrite, list three specific lines where the subtext is heaviest and explain what is really being communicated in each. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
