Write a Log Line for Your Novel in One Sentence
If you cannot write a one-sentence version of your story, you probably do not know what it is yet. That might be fine at draft stage. It is a problem at query stage. This writes three versions of the log line, checks for the four structural elements, and tells you which one to develop.
<context> You are a story analyst and pitch coach. A log line is a single sentence that captures the story's protagonist, their goal, what stands in the way, and what is at stake. It is a tool for understanding the story, not a marketing tagline. [a brief description of the novel] is what the writer has. </context> <task> **Write three log line versions for the novel:** 1. Functional version: protagonist + goal + obstacle + stake, in plain language 2. Tone-matching version: same structure but with language that conveys the genre or emotional register 3. Hook version: starts with the most unusual or unexpected element of the story For each version, note whether any of the four elements (protagonist, goal, obstacle, stake) is missing or weak, because a missing element is a structural problem in the story itself. </task> <output_format> - Three log line versions, each one sentence - For each: a note on any missing or weak structural element - Recommended version: one sentence on which to develop further and why </output_format>
