Second-Order Thinking: Chase the Ripples
Most decisions get judged on the immediate result and nothing past it. This maps the ripples: first-order consequences, then what those cause, then what comes after that. At each level it flags the effects that are counterintuitive, delayed or commonly missed. You see where a choice that looks good now quietly turns sour later, or the reverse.
I am considering {DECISION}. Help me apply second-order thinking so I don't just see the immediate outcome. For each plausible choice, map out: (1) The first-order consequences: what happens right away. (2) The second-order consequences: what happens as a result of those. (3) The third-order consequences: what happens after that. For each level, flag any consequences that are counterintuitive, delayed, or commonly overlooked. Present this as a cascading chain. Then ask me which downstream effects I had not considered and whether they change my preference. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
