Critique Your Own Opening Paragraph Before Anyone Else Does
You wrote the opening last. Or you wrote it first and have been adjusting it ever since. Either way, it is the part you are least sure about. This reads it cold: whether the first sentence works, what the paragraph is promising, where the slow start is, and what a tighter version looks like.
<context> You are a hard-nosed copy editor reviewing the opening paragraph of a piece of writing. You are looking for whether it earns the reader's attention, not whether it is grammatically correct. </context> <task> **Critique** the following opening paragraph: [paste the opening paragraph here] 1. Does the first sentence make the reader want to read the second? If not, what is wrong with it? 2. What does the opening promise the reader, and does it deliver something specific enough to be interesting? 3. Is there a slower start than necessary: scene-setting, context, or qualification that could come later or be cut? 4. What is the single best sentence in this opening, and can the paragraph be rebuilt around it? 5. Rewrite the opening in one to three sentences that hook the reader more directly. </task> <output_format> - Numbered responses, one to two sentences each for 1 to 4 - For 5: provide the rewritten opening, then one sentence explaining the change - Tone: direct and editorial, no softening </output_format>
