Scene Heading & Action Line Clinic
Bad formatting tells a reader you are an amateur before they reach the dialogue. This reviews one scene for headings and action lines only: are the INT./EXT. slugs correct, is the action in present tense and active voice, are paragraphs broken into short visual units, is camera direction creeping in where it should not. Dialogue is off the table. For screenwriters tightening their craft on the page.
Review the following scene from my screenplay and critique the formatting and craft of the scene headings and action lines only: do not comment on dialogue.
Specifically assess:
1. Are scene headings correctly formatted (INT./EXT., LOCATION, TIME OF DAY)?
2. Do action lines read in present tense and active voice?
3. Are action paragraphs broken into short, visual units (no wall-of-text)?
4. Is camera direction avoided or handled appropriately?
5. Does the prose convey mood and subtext, not just blocking?
