Historical Fiction Known-Ending Beat Design
Your readers already know how the history turns out, so suspense has to come from somewhere else. Give it your logline, the known outcome and your protagonist's private goal, and it designs a beat structure built on dramatic irony: at each beat, what the character thinks is possible, what the reader knows is coming, and the tension between the two.
I am writing historical fiction where the reader already knows the ending. My logline is: {LOGLINE}. The known historical outcome is: {KNOWN_OUTCOME}. My protagonist's private goal: separate from the historical event: is: {PRIVATE_GOAL}. Design a beat structure that uses dramatic irony deliberately: at each major beat, tell me (a) what the protagonist believes is possible, (b) what the reader knows is coming, and (c) how that gap creates dread or pathos rather than cheap suspense. The structure should have seven beats. End with a note on how to make the inevitable ending feel earned rather than fatalistic.
