Backstory That Explains Without Excusing
Your character does something indefensible and you want readers to follow the logic without forgiving it. Give the character and the harmful action, and you get a backstory with the formative wound, the false belief drawn from it, the first time they acted on it, and the line that keeps them accountable. For writers walking the edge between understanding and unearned sympathy.
My character {CHARACTER_NAME} does something morally indefensible in my story: {HARMFUL_ACTION}. I want to write a backstory that makes this action psychologically understandable, so readers can trace the logic, without letting the character off the hook or generating unearned sympathy.
Design a backstory that includes: the formative wound, the false belief they drew from it, the moment they first acted on that belief, and the small choices along the way that compounded into who they are now. Identify where the character had genuine alternatives and chose wrong. The backstory should increase moral complexity, not reduce it. Flag any elements that risk tipping into excuse-making. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
