Ending Autopsy: Why It Falls Flat and How to Fix It
The ending isn't landing and you don't know if it summarises too much, over-explains the theme or just stops on the wrong beat. This names the failure, then offers two alternative endings: one minimal, one bolder. Good for writers whose closing lines fizzle and want both the diagnosis and a way out.
My ending isn't landing. Diagnose why and fix it.
Step 1, DIAGNOSIS: Identify which of these common ending failures applies (may be more than one): (a) summarises instead of resonates, (b) introduces new ideas too late, (c) over-explains the theme, (d) ends on the wrong beat, (e) tone mismatch with the rest of the piece.
Step 2, REWRITE: Provide two alternative endings. The first should be minimal: the smallest possible change that would make the existing ending land. The second should be a bold reimagining that earns a stronger emotional close.
