SELF VALUES UNDER PRESSURE 200 words
Discover what you actually value when the pressure is on
Anyone can list noble values on a calm afternoon. The real ones show up under a deadline or in the middle of a row. Hold a recent stressful stretch in mind: write down the values you claimed to hold, then look at what you actually prioritised, let slip, and protected at all costs. The gap between the two tells you what you genuinely value.
This exercise explores how your values behave under pressure. Think of a recent period of high stress: a deadline, a conflict, a difficult stretch. Hold that time in mind as you work through this. Step 1: What values did you claim to hold during that period? Write down two or three. Step 2: Now look at your behaviour. What did you actually prioritise? What did you let slip? What did you protect at all costs? Step 3: Is there a gap between your stated values and your under-pressure behaviour? Describe it without self-judgement, just observe it. Step 4: What does the gap tell you? Possible answers: the value you claimed isn't actually core; or a deeper value overrides it under stress; or you don't yet have the skills to live your values when it's hard. Step 5: Is there a value that shows up strongly only when you're stressed, something like control, approval, or safety, that you wouldn't normally name as a value? Write it down. These are sometimes called shadow values. Step 6: What would it mean to acknowledge that shadow value without shame and work with it rather than against it?
