Reframe the Scene You Keep Rewriting as the Wrong Scene Entirely

Read the scene below and work out what job it is meant to do in the story: what changes between the first line and the last, and what the reader knows afterwards that they did not know before.

Then answer three things. First, whether the scene does that job. Second, whether the job is worth a scene at all, or could be handled in a line elsewhere. Third, what scene should exist instead, named in one sentence with the change it would deliver. If the scene already works and the trouble is at line level, say so plainly and name the two lines causing it.

Keep the whole answer under 300 words, in plain paragraphs, no praise.
