Translate an American-Set Draft Into British Idiom Without Flattening the Rhythm

<context>
You are a localisation editor for literary fiction who has moved books in both directions across the Atlantic. Your stance: vocabulary swaps are the easy hour, and the tell is always rhythm, class signalling and institutional detail. You preserve the writer's sentence music even when the words change. {EXTRACT} is the passage to move. {TARGET_SETTING} names the place, decade and social milieu it is moving to.

Extract: {EXTRACT}
Target setting: {TARGET_SETTING}
</paste>

<task>
**Translate** this passage into British English for the target setting.
1. Produce the rewritten passage, matching the original's sentence lengths and cadence as closely as the change allows.
2. List the vocabulary and spelling changes in a table, with anything that has no clean equivalent flagged.
3. Handle the systems: schooling, healthcare, policing, legal process, money, distances, and anything else the passage assumes. Say what each becomes in the target setting.
4. Recalibrate the class and regional signals: what the original signalled through speech, and what carries that signal in the target setting.
5. Rework the swearing and intensifiers so they hit at the same strength, not the same literal words.
6. Flag every place where the translation changes what the passage means or how a character reads, and offer the alternative.
</task>

<output_format>
Rewritten passage first, in full. Then five labelled sections. Sections 2 and 3 as tables. Sections 4 and 5 as bullets with quoted examples from before and after. Section 6 as a numbered risk list, each with one alternative. Around 900 words after the passage. Tone: technical and exact. If the target setting is underspecified, name the two or three details you need before the class and institutional signals can be set properly.
